Justice beyond Jails: The limits of carceral responses to gender-based violence
When someone experiences gender-based violence, the default response is often rooted in policing, prosecution, and imprisonment. Yet many people experiencing harm continue to face barriers to safety, care, and accountability within these systems.
This conversation brings together activists, researchers, and movement leaders to reflect on the limitations of carceral responses to gender-based violence and explore approaches grounded in feminist accountability, community support, and long-term safety.
Why This Conversation Matters
Across the world, responses to gender-based violence continue to rely heavily on punishment and incarceration. Yet evidence and lived experience continue to show that these systems often fail to reduce violence and can deepen harm for many communities.
Many people experiencing harm do not seek support through formal legal systems due to fear, stigma, distrust, criminalization, or previous experiences of exclusion. These barriers become even more severe for communities already navigating discrimination and marginalization.
Justice beyond Jails asks:
What does accountability look like beyond punishment?
How do we create safety without reproducing harm?
What approaches are already emerging across movements and communities?
